Discovery Walks/Coaching
The Lasting Impact of SLC’s Coaching Program
Utilizing a three-year federal grant, SLC piloted a “Coaching Program” modeled after the “Learning Walk Method” developed by Tony Alvarado and Elaine Fink in New York and San Diego to help individual schools identify ways to improve teaching methods and student outcomes. More than 140 principals utilized this program in their school between 2006 and 2009. The success of the “coaching” program, whereby a Principal, Assistant Principal and SLC Coach work as a team to recommend and implement professional development strategies to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes, has led to the establishment of the “Discovery Walk” program.
