About Summer Institute

Once selected and after two Pre-Institute meetings, the 25-30 new Fellows attend the first of two (2) residential Summer Institutes in late June. This 5-day residential exercise is a retreat for professional development where new Fellows receive mentoring from previous program graduates and training from nationally-recognized experts in the fields critical to directing school improvement, leadership, and change. Fellows return to the Summer Institute the following summer as veteran Fellows, allowing them to deepen their understanding of leadership, hone their leadership skills and expand their networking opportunities.

The retreat focuses on:
• Leaders of learning (transformational and instructional leadership)
• Changing school culture
• Recognizing, monitoring and rewarding good teaching
• Data-driven leadership
• Developing action plans to complete school improvement
• Building an effective leadership team

New Fellows receive on-going SLC support, networking events, mentoring, and a comprehensive disaggregated report of their students’ test scores.

Evidence of Success

‘‘My SLC team presented our school improvement plan to the certified faculty members. I was soooo proud of them, … and look forward to seeing all stakeholders implementing our plan.’’
Mary Jane Smith, Principal
Honey Island Elementary School, St. Tammany Schools

‘‘Since 1997, School Leadership Center has consistently provided long-term, job-embedded leadership development programs and activities for principals and assistant school leaders in southern Louisiana. There are no other leadership programs or organizations that can approach the SLC schools’ record for improving student achievement.’’
John Brown, Former Fellows Program Director
